Local Food Picnic, Saturday May 16th

It's on again! Last year's Local Food Picnic at Crystal Waters was great fun for all!
At the last Sustainable Maleny public forum, all attendees were in favour of doing a Local Food Picnic.
The idea behind a local food picnic is to source all the ingredients of our picnic from within a 100km radius - the closer the better. The task is made a little easier by the presence of the Blackall Range Growers' Market happening at the same venue, same time. However, variety of food is always good at a shared picnic.

Engineers Australia is hosting a seminar on South East Queensland's Transport System in the Peak Oil and Climate Change Era.
The public transport system in SEQ is far from prepared for the coming challenges presented by Peak Oil and Climate Change - this seminar will educate and motivate!

The Moreton Bay Region Sustainable Living Expo is an annual event showcasing all aspects of living sustainably.
In 2009, the Expo theme is 'The Future of Food'. The Expo will explore some of the issues facing our future food production and will feature some of the very best in their chosen industry.
Special guest presenters include Annette McFarlane from ABC Gardening Australia and celebrity chef Matt Golinski from Channel 10's 'Ready Steady Cook'.
On Saturday May 23rd the premiere of the new film ‘In Transition’ will be streamed live on the internet from the UK.

With input from Transition communities around the world it tells the story of the people that have looked peak oil and climate change square in the face, and responded with creativity, compassion and genius.
In the film you will see the stories of communities creating their own currencies, setting up their own pubs, planting trees, growing food. You’ll see local authorities getting behind their local Transition initiatives, and get a sense of the scale of this emerging movement.
It will commence at 10:45pm and runs for an hour.

"Make new friends, meet old ones" - open-to-all comers, low-key, friendly gathering at which some people might be playing board-games but others might just be having a cuppa/dinner and watching or chatting.
A new monthly event is the ‘Welcome Mat’ night at the Upfront Club (31 Maple Street, Maleny) on the 2nd Thursday of every month.
As our town's population grows, how can we keep that sense of community and neighbourliness that attracts newcomers to Maleny?
Are there easy ways for newcomers to meet established residents, make friends, and get involved in community if they wish?
The point is that there is a warm welcome to anybody, whether you are a family or someone on your own, new to town or third generation! Bring board games if you have them (if you wish).
This Saturday will be the first Montville local growers' market...so come along and support this new local venture! Have your baskets and bags ready to pick up some gorgeous local produce.
The market will be happening on the second Saturday of each month.

This concert is a fundraiser for Sustainable Maleny's community garden project, Bridge Creek Gardens on Bridge Creek Road, Maleny.
Music by Telemann, Bach and Handel will be performed by our favourite Maleny-based Recorder ensemble, I Dolce Venti, together with Harpsicord and Viola da Gamba special guest musicians.

The 2009 World Environment Day Festival promises a diverse and exciting program involving the community under an interactive umbrella of environmental awareness and action for our future.
Key elements of the World Environment Day Festival include:

Come along and explore issues around farming the animals some of us eat!
A number of speakers including representatives from Animal Liberation Queensland and the Vegan/Vegetarian Society will share their views and knowledge. The views of farmers with ‘better’ animal husbandry practices will also be included. This event aims to raise awareness about animal food sources with a focus on animal well-being.
The topic will be explored from a number of angles such as ethics, capitalism and the market, legislation, and nutrition. You will also learn about the history of animal rights groups such as those represented and explore ‘alternatives’ such as kangaroo farming.
