Action Plan

Getting there from here

We have a long way to go before Maleny can be called truly 'sustainable'. But if we are to effectively move towards that goal, we will need a coherent plan that includes:

  • An analysis of the current situation
  • A vision for the future
  • A path to move from the current situation to the envisioned one

This process could be further broken down into vital areas: food, transport, employment, education, energy, water and waste, health, accommodation, economics and the community itself. Each area could be managed by a small project group.

Fortunately, a similar plan has already been formulated for the town of Kinsale in Ireland. We aim to use this plan as a basis for ours. Click here to see the Kinsale Energy Descent Action Plan (PDF, 1.2MB).

The Sustainable Maleny Action Plan is in its very early stages. We invite you to take part in this exciting endeavour!

SEACing an answer to energy descent

Liz and I have signed up for the "Time for an Oil Change" course at the Sunshine Coast Energy Action Centre (SEAC) at Yandina. The main goal of this course is to produce an Energy Descent Action plan.

Unfortunately we missed last week's session, but there are several to go yet. I'm hopeful that by the end of it, we might have a fairly well-thought out plan which could form the basis for a Maleny-centred one.

The co-ordinators, permaculturists Sonya Wallace and Janet Billington, bring a thoughtful enthusiasm to the whole process. And the participants themselves are a fascinating mixed bag of backgrounds and talents. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this process develops.
