With the continuing rise in petrol prices car pooling will become much more attractive in the near future and, for some people, a necessity.

We've had an idea of a website for people to book and offer rides (still under consideration). We could either build one ourselves, or select a national site and promote it locally.

We've also had an idea (borrowed from Golden Bay, NZ) of making seats where anybody who wants a ride can sit. We could start with a seat somewhere on the north side of Maple St. for anybody wanting to get down to Landsborough and a seat on the south side of the road out of Landsborough for anybody wanting to come up to the Range. The idea is that if you're driving past the seat & there's somebody there you can offer them a lift. There will be an expectation that the 'hitcher' will contribute towards petrol costs, whatever they can afford.

This 'civilised hitchhiking' idea is pretty simple but it needs the co-operation of the council for us to site seats and signs as well as somebody to make seats (similar to the Apex seat outside the Maple St. Co-op?).
