Other options for Porter's Farm

My preference would be a combination of housing, eco-business park and open space for a 'growers market'. Additional housing may appear to be unnecessary given the range of urban lots available but housing would have 2 advantages. The first is it would provide money for community projects; the second is it would be an opportunity to have a 'sustainable' housing development, something sadly lacking in most developments in Maleny. An eco-business park is needed because even though our urban footprint has doubled, the commercial zone of Maleny has stayed the same. Jobs are needed in the local area, people need to be able to walk or ride a bike to work. Maleny has a range of unique environmental or organically certified businesses that need an appropriate home, including Barung LandCare. By creating an Eco-Business Park, the opportunity exists for a covenant or 'code of practice' on the area so that businesses have to meet certain standards to be allowed to operate there. Clustering the eco-businesses together also creates a range of networking and marketing opportunities. A Growers Market also needs space, plenty of parking, and preferably a very large covered area so it can operate rain or shine. Due to insurance public liability constraints it needs to be on public land. It needs to be central so that people are not travelling a long distance, thus defeating one of the advantages of 'local' food. The value of the land is too high for food production to be a major element but a Botanic Gardens with both local endemic species and a permaculture food forest would add value for locals and tourists alike.

Local employment

Thanks for that thoughtful start to this big subject.

I like the idea of an 'Eco-Business Park' and 'sustainable' housing (provided they don't cut into the green space too much).

There's not much space for new businesses in Maleny, and yet we need to expand opportunities for local employment. The commuter lifestyle is hugely inefficient and can't be sustained in the face of reduced fossil fuel usage.

The 'Maleny Town Farm' and 'Sustainability Centre' concepts also need sites. MCP is an obvious candidate.

Council will be calling for community input on the land shortly and some sensible submissions need to be prepared, not just for the grand vision, but also for its components.
