On Thursday 29th October, Slow Food Noosa will be hosting a breakfast with guest speaker Bruce Molloy of Veggie Village.

Veggie Village is a community garden at Peregian Beach. The idea to start a garden came out of Bruce Molloy’s frustration when, after failing to grow veggies in sandy soil in his backyard, he came up with an idea to “Build a classroom and wait for the teachers to turn up“.

The teachers or Gurus as they’re now known have turned up en masse and hold regular workshops and working bees to teach “The Village People” how to grow veggies in individual and communal veggie patches.

“The idea of the village is for people to rent a veggie patch (or allotment) where they have hands on learning about all aspects of growing using permaculture principles“, says Big Cheese aka Bruce Molloy. “After they have learnt the fundamentals they hand over their patch to a new member and apply their new found knowledge to their own backyard or balcony. The Villager who releases the veggie patch then becomes a mentor for the new member”.

From the success of Veggie Village, Bruce decided to hang up his computer mouse and form a company called Edible Landscapes Consultants to inspire other members of the community to ‘grow their own’ by helping design their backyards into productive permaculture gardens.

This breakfast promises to be a fun occasion with some delicious food cooked by Justin Chambers, Blue Ginger’s new chef.

Bookings are essential for catering purposes, so to avoid disappointment book no later than Tuesday 27th October.
